Easy as Pie!

We are working on word choice in writing.  Students will be exploring ways to strengthen the words they use in their writing pieces.  Today we talked about similes.  Here is our class generated list:

  • As hot as…a campfire, volcano, the surface of the sun, a stove, fire
  • As slimy as…a bulldog’s drool, a slug
  • As useless as…a brother cleaning your room, a trash, as a baby
  • Messy like…a monkey, your hair in a wind storm, a pig in mud, a baby
  • Amazing like…Ms. Rice, an A+, my test
  • As grumpy as…a mad dragon, troll, old man, mom on laundry day
  • As soft as…cotton, a pillow, a bed, a bunny
  • Tough like…a biker, Superman, my head
  • As hard as… a rock, a brick
  • As loud as…my brother when I won’t let him play my x-box, a pig stuck in a fence, a lion on a pitchfork, the drums
  • Silly like…a clown, my brother, a cat
  • Like eating…cake, a rock, a pie, a feast, a taco on taco Tuesday

We will also talk about Proverbs, using quotations, strong adjectives, finding words with similar meanings, idioms, personification, onomatopoeia, description and metaphors.  Here are some games to play for practice.
