Scientific Process

Today we watched video clips and talked about science questions.  A strong science question is a question you can conduct an experiment to answer.  It requires gathering data in the form of a measurement.  If you can google the answer, it is a research question.  If you are making something,(for example a boat or a volcano) it is a demonstration.

Students should come up with a scientific inquiry (experiment) question at home this week.  They should fill in the question portion only of the packet and return it by Tuesday, Jan. 19.  Students need to complete the work at home each week.  DO NOT work ahead as we will be talking about the expectations for each step weekly.  Thank you for the support of our learning

Coming up with a Good Question...

Think of a topic that you like and that you are interested in; now it’s time to write a question or identify a problem within that topic. To give you an idea of what we mean you can start off by filling in the question blanks with the following list of words:

The Effect Question: What is the effect of _______________ on ____________________?

  •  sunlight on the growth of plants
  •  eye color pupil dilation
  •  brands of soda a piece of meat
  •  temperature the size of a balloon
  •  oil a ramp

The How Does Affect Question:   How does the _______________ affect _______________?

  •  color of light the growth of plants
  •  humidity the growth of fungi
  •  color of a material its absorption of heat

The Which/What and Verb Question:   Which/What _____________ (verb) _____________?

  •  paper towel is most absorbent
  •  foods do meal worms prefer
  •  detergent makes the most bubbles
  •  paper towel is strongest
  •  peanut butter tastes the best
Hypothesis
You should research important parts of your question and get background information.  The hypothesis should include the independent variable (what you are changing) and the dependent variable (what you are measuring) and what you learned from your reserach.

Hypothesis: I think if the independent variable then dependent variable because (my research shows...)___________________________________.
