Math Unit 7: Multiplication

We started new math groups this week and are doing a review of multiplication. The students have discussed and explored divisibility. Looking at numbers larger than 100, students should be able to tell if they are divisible by 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, or 10. Here is a printable game you can play to practice this skill.

We will also work on estimating to check for reasonableness of answers as well as reviewing rectangle, expanded form, all-partials, and compact (traditional) multiplication.  These steps demonstrate for students how place value is used in multiplication.  Here is a video on rectangle method.

Students should also be able to multiply numbers using place value. For example 3 X 700 you simply multiply 3 X 7 and then append the 00 at the end to get 2100. Here is an online game to practice.

Keep working on those math facts. Practice multiplying at home.   Mastery and fluency in the facts increases accuracy with multiple digit multiplication.  Enjoy!
