Our math program is a conceptual based program to teach students the processes of mathematics. Our current unit is adding and subtracting with regrouping. When we learned to do this as kids we carried and added or borrowed, crossed out, and subtracted. Our "old school" method is now being refered to as compact method. The students have also learned expanded form, friendly numbers, all partials, number line, and base 10 strategies for adding. They are learning counting up, counting backwards, friendly numbers, expanded form, and base 10. The purpose of these startegies is for students to use what they know about math to solve problems. Understanding what the numbers and digits mean (often starting with base 10) and being able to represent the numbers (expanded form) will allow the students to see what they are doing as they add or subtract (all partials) and eventually lead them to solving problems "old school" (compact method). Here is our first attempt at an online lesson to illustrate these methods. You may have to adjust your volume to hear some of our softer spoken students. There are also 2 errors in computation. I thought we would be able to edit the video, that is not the case with this application. Enjoy! Here is an online site for practice. They also have printable worksheets.
Here is our subtractions video. Thank you to Mrs. Norton for helping create this video. Again, we are learning so there may be slight errors. Here is an online site to practice subtraction. This site also has printable worksheets.
