Module 1 Place Value of Large Numbers

This year we have been learning about place value of larger numbers and practicing place value to one million.  In third grade, students worked with numbers through the thousands.  In fourth grade we are moving into ten-thousand, hundred-thousand, and millions.

Students should be able to represent numbers in many ways.  Here are some terms we have used:

  • NUMBER EXAMPLE: 123,456

  • Written "word" form:  spell the entire number word "one hundred twenty-three thousand, four hundred fifty-six".

  • Expanded form: fill in zeros on each part of the number "100,000 + 20,000 + 3,000 + 400 + 50 + 6"

  • Unit form: use words to express the placevalue "123,456 ones OR 12,345 tens and 6 ones OR 123 thousands and 456 ones", etc.

  • Place value form: 1 hundred thousands, 2 ten thousands, 3 thousands, 4 hundreds 5 tens, 6 ones

  • Next we will work on rounding.  Students should be able to compare and round numbers through 1,000,000.  Here are printable games to play at home to reinforce this skill as well as other games to practice:

    Order Up!
    Comparing and Ordering Numbers
    Place Value Puzzler
    How to Round Video
    Ice, Ice Maybe

Understanding place value will allow students to build upon this understanding as we add, subtract, multiply and divide.  Students should be able to add and subtract multi-digit numbers with regrouping.  Please be sure to practice adding single digit numbers quickly at home to help with the higher level skill.

Check out the videos (please excuse the rough format) to see expanded form and all partials.  This is our Facebook page so you may have to scroll down.  There is a video on expanded form/all partial addition and one on subtraction.  https://www.facebook.com/MsLRice/

This is a link to the workbook packet students have been using in class.  It is designed to practice knowledge/understanding and then move into application of knowledge.  Not every students does every problem as we differentiate to meet all needs.  You are welcome to use any of this resource at home.  You child may struggle with the word problems if they are still mastering knowledge and understanding.  Our goal is for all students to have knowledge of these skills and works towards application.

Please be sure to talk with your student about these skills at home.  Thank you for your support of our learning.

    STARBASE Day 3

Another great day of learning! Today we explored endothermic and exothermic reactions, completed a CAD design, made working circuits and completed our rockets. Be sure to wash those shirts so they are ready for the last day on Wednesday. Check out pictures of our fun here. https://goo.gl/photos/wD9dimKhwFyPbJp49

    STARBASE Day 1

We had such a fun day at STARBASE.  Students worked on an engineering design process to create a safe shuttle for Lt. Eggbert.  They learned about molecules and building blocks of atoms.  They started building their rockets which we will launch next week.  We even road on a hover board and explored Newton's Laws of Motion.  It was a great day!  A huge thank you to the parents who went and made learning possible.
