Addition and Subtraction of Large Numbers

We have been working on large number addition and subtraction.  The goal is for student to understand place value through 10,000 when adding and subtracting.  We are also working on estimating.  Students should always estimate by rounding to the highest place value possible to check for reasonableness.  Students will have a test Tuesday, Nov. 18th for this unit.  Here are some things you can practice at home.  Click on the links to see examples of the method.  Students will need to have an understanding of each method.

Students should be able to use a number line to add and subtract.  Encourage them to use understanding of 1's, 10's, 100's, 1000's to add or subtract.

Students should also be able to use expanded form.  With this method students should expand the number and then add or subtract.  Students can also draw pictures of Base 10 short hand to work with expanded form if they need to see the numbers.

Students should be able to use all-partials to add or subtract.  In this method the work is done under the equation instead of compacting the tens, hundreds, thousands, etc. on top.
